Document Summary

4-7% of population have palpable nodules, 50% of people with normal feeling thyroid have lesions/nodules. Less than 5% of thyroid lesions are malignant. Size is not reliable indicator of malignancy, similar appearances b/n benign & malignant. Large size does not mean malignant; more the internal components that determine malignancy. 5 yr survival rate of thyroid cancer is 98%; depends on type & stage; some types over 99% This is bc they are able to remove the entire thyroid. Able to biopsy the thyroid, parathyroid, lymph nodes, salivary glands (parotid, submandibular) Anatomy to be aware of when biopsying thyroid: carotid arteries & jugular veins adjacent, nerve roots of brachial plexus, trachea, lymph nodes, esophagus sits behind the left lobe of the thyroid. Usually us guided bc we don"t have any overlying bowel/air to cause artifacts; high res probes to see superficial anatomy. Tiger territory - area referred to as this bc of the dangers of putting a needle in this area.
