MEDRADSC 3C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Nephrectomy, Nephron, Hematocrit
Renal Biopsies
A little aatoy reie…
• Renal hilum: contains draining system
• Minor calyces: collects urine and filters into major calyces renal pelvis
• Renal cortex: where we find the functional units of the kidney (nephrons), quite a bit of
thickness/if it has been impacted, it may affect the biopsy
• Fat: not normally seen in children, accumulates as patient ages
• If renal issues along with diabetes: increased amount of fat in major calyces
• Psoas muscles= unique position of kidney, hilum of kidney sits on psoas muscle, the medial
aspect is more anterior than the lateral aspect, upper poles are more posterior than the lower
poles
• Ascending colon cover right kidney, descending colon covers left kidney → due biopsy with
patient prone

•
o Kidneys are very vascular, woven throughout the tissue, the whole function of the
kidney is to filter the blood → risk of hemorrhage
Some things to note:
• Masses are often surgically removed
o Partial nephrectomy: only a piece removed, good healing capabilities, only small portion
diseases
o Complete removal of affected kidney: huge mass
