Done as a way to prepare for the future, for now, & ensure all expenses are being met. To identify constraints on a department (hiring budget, capital budget reflecting equipment) Provide a means for monitoring expenses & revenues. Relates to acquisition of fixed assess (ie equipment or projects) - usually large items, big purchases; usually comes with a planned approach to accomodate for the large asset. Equipment (usually major) > ie) ct scanner, linear accelerator, us transducer, pacs system. Includes all revenue & expenses related to day-to-day operations of services & programs. Revolving purchases (short term) required for ongoing operation. Preventative maintenance contracts on equipment purchased, leases & annual fees on certain equipment. Smallest organizational unit for which a budget is prepared. Segment of a business or organization in which costs can be segregated with the head of that segment being accountable for expenses.
