MEDRADSC 2I03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Glycemic Index, Ulcerative Colitis, Barium
Document Summary
Neoplasms (benign or malignant; just means new growth) Polyps (opposite of diverticula, protrude into the bowel) Make sure patient is not put into any risk (perforation) Bowel needs to be free of fecal matter so there are no false positives. Clear fluid diet - day prior to exam. Colonic lavage (if necessary); same as a cleansing enema. Single contrast - ba - 15% - 25% w/v. Has an analgesic effect & increases retention of contrast. Offers most patient comfort; bowel does not change, people don"t experience cramping. Tip b - only 1 access points into the tip; air tube to inflate the balloon; larger tubes is where the barium is moving through. Tip a - almost never used, used to keep the tip in place. Shows the balloon blown up on the tip. Patient history & procedure explained for better cooperation. Ba ran thru to the tip before insertion so that air is not pushed into the patients bowel.
