How many images are acquired in an exam: cr= 2-5, ct= 25-250, mr= 25-250, us= 35 (still images, 120 (images within 2-3 second lops) x20. What does this all lead to data overload! Stratergy to manage image overload: archival management. Archival costs have trended downwards for hardware: the potential saving has been consumed by increasing admisnteraitve costs, licensed managed software and support. Dicom images are large files: not compressed, contains all volume data+ demographic info, need to be viewed within pacs, must be converted to another file type for use outside of pacs. Other file types include: jpeg, tiff, etc. While archive space is following the general trend defined by moore"s law; image data is also growing in size capacity doubling every two years (approximately) Volume imaging, in addition to trends in physiological qualification, are driving image data sets to larger and larger sizes.
