History most got cataracts: wc rontgen discovered x-rays. Anything below visible light does not ionized. Energy is released as an x-ray photon. First radiograph was of his wife"s hand: marie curie. Discovered radium radioactivity (something that emits a source) Electrons are produced in the filament, photons are released through the window: characteristic b/c of the tungsten. Some x-rays go straight through the patient and some are absorbed: differential attenuation difference b/w structures that absorb and that go through. When x-ray goes through the patient you get black image: window glass low attenuation (air, frosted glass (muscle, black glass high attenuation (bone) Lead lined glass protects us from the radiation: portable x-ray units stand 10 feet away and wear lead shielding. As low as reasonably achievable no amount of safe dose. Use lead shielding, limit around the area we are exposing for each x-ray image.
