MEDRADSC 1B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 28: Pressure Ulcer, Contracture, Compression Stockings
Document Summary
Immobility & its effects on the musculoskeletal system. Loses strength, endurance, & mass (atrophy); all change very quickly; 12% a week; after 3-5 months 50% is gone. Shriveled up muscle caused by the inactive muscle; need to worry about disuse atrophy. Contracture; heavy sheets the tips of the toes would be pressed out (pointing toes) & can cause permanent contracture of the muscles bc the tendons & ligaments tend to shorten & lose elasticity. Osteoblastic activity (formation of new bone) = osteoclastic activity (resorption of bone) Normal osteoclastic activity leading to osteoporosis (reduced mineralization. Increased breakdown = increased serum levels of calcium = hypercalcemia. Complications: renal calculi (calcium stones; aka kidney stones); caused from concentrated urine. Immobility & its effects on the cutaneous/integumentary system. Fats & musculature depletes as we age, causing thin skin. Can breakdown when blood supply is impaired or when cellular regeneration is reduced; characteristic of older individuals. Inadequate subcutaneous tissue in the elderly or debilitated person.
