Document Summary

The body"s specific defence mechanism which responds to particular substances, cells, toxins, or proteins that are perceived as foreign to the body. Bone marrow: white blood cells are produced. Lymph nodes: matured white blood cells live here. Foreign or non-self substance that has entered the body and can stimulate the immune system to respond (aren"t always foreign) Infectious agents (viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites), non infectious agents (from the environment, food, pollen, and bee venom), and others (drugs, vaccines, transfusions, and transplanted tissues) Major histocompatibility complex mhc: inherited from parents, code antigen molecules, specifically self antigens, detect cell changes (from cancer or virus), and alerts immune system. (twins have identical mhc) Antigens are proteins on the surface of the individual"s cells that are recognized as foreign.
