LIFESCI 2G03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Coagulation, Haemophilia, Factor Viii
Document Summary
Diff parts of system are indicated in image. Response to lesion - coagulation factors are expressed and targeted to lesion. 7 factors interact to form lock on lesion. Opening/cut can be closed, diminish infection (role is to stop bleeding to ensure blood loss in minimized) When any one of the coagulation factors is missing, bleeding continues. Any 7 genes can affect ability to block bleeding. Even in individuals with wildtype or hetero alleles, variation in how much of these factors they are expressing. If you assay blood, can assay through cohulation factors. Various ranges of how much factors is present (iu per ml of blood) For individuals who show no symptoms, range is large. 5%-40% where there is mild hemophilia but large range between that minimum. Increased bleeding (due to less coagulation factors) but still manageable. Have to have less than 1% (coagulation factor activity) before you classify condition as hemophilia.
