Beliefs about nature of reality: what is real. Is the social world patterned and predictable (realism: natural world model, laws, is it socially constructed? (idealism, abit of both? (subtle or constructed realism; pragmatism) Ontological believes are important in selecting research strategies: social world is considered stable, patterned and predictable. Stat anaysis looks for relationships and patterns. Social world is changing and constructed through our actions: qualitative, interviews etc. develop understanding of how individuals make sense of social work (why/how) How do we come to know the world: inductive logic/process: bottom-up approach, deductive logic/process: top-down approach. What is the role of the knower : objective observer: identify patterns and outcomes, measure the world, subjective observer: is reflexive and part of the interaction; interpretive, positivism is is total separation while interpretivism is separated. Major epistemology in qualitative research: postmodern perspective (multiple conditions) Focus on multiple conditions is like a storage box.
