Business: consolidation: widespread failures; banks, retailers, manufacturing, construction. Larger businesses are able to buy up competitors. Region: prairie west (hit the hardest), no market for agricultural exports. West = dust bowl: years of over farming, strain on the land, extreme drout; top soil dried up and blew away. Big ticket manufacturing: large items that you often need to borrow money to purchase (ex. cars, appliances), continued to suffer as people did not have the money to purchase these items. Small ticket manufacturing: making things people need that do not cost excessive amounts of money (ex. clothing), recovers more quickly than big ticket. Mainly women working in small ticket manufacturing (ex. garment industry, of ce work) Teaching (female dominated), people are staying in school longer. During the depression, society begins to value females as the breadwinners, women delay marriage in attempt to avoid the pressure of losing their jobs. Recent immigrants face many dif culties with the depression.
