Self-suf ciency - vast majority of production is local, getting goods from the outside is extremely dif cult, imported goods are a luxury. Sons - apprentices in the trade to the father. Sold to people you knew, felt accountable for the product/service they received. Owns the shop, most of the tools. Involved in the business side of the shop. Most highly skilled person in the shop (also the boss) Are skilled workers, earn a good living. Not as experienced or skilled as mastercraftsmen, haven"t fully established themselves. Often move from shop to shop to gain more experience. Many shops only have one, sometimes two. Young people there to learn the trade. Do a lot of the grunt work (cleaning up, moving supplies around) Taught apprentices how to behave like men and take responsibility. Finishing = journeyman nishing his trade and becoming a mastercraftman. Independent and respectable status (similar to the independence of independent farmers)
