Treason and transformation: war measures act, win the war sentiment. Early wartime: plans and outcomes, conditions and growth. Early in war, people didn"t see the struggle coming. Labour organizations weren"t prepared either, didn"t think workers would get caught up. Conditions change as war goes on: globalization to support the war. Canada was expected to produce a lot, for britain as well. Almost everyone has a steady job, solidarity goes up. Good conditions for unions to grow (up by 60%) Workers are a lot more confident, have more leverage. Two divisions: conservative patriots, radicalism element :alberta, manitoba area. Propaganda, media was discovered and effective and important: said that this is a fight for freedom, for democracy, also a nation fit for heroes , for the soldiers fighting. Profiteering has two forms: canadian companies and contractors profiteering. Gave contracts to people they knew: big amounts are going to army, merchants jack up prices. Radicalizing: we are being asked to do everything.
