KINESIOL 4SS3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Virtuous Circle And Vicious Circle, Thoracic Vertebrae, Stretch Reflex
Document Summary
The ability to maintain the body"s posiion over its base of support: staic: control of postural sway during quiet standing, dynamic: control of balance during perturbaions of stability (reaching, moving centre of gravity away from base of support) Amplitude and frequency of postural sway increases with aging. Exaggerated when standing with one foot, eyes closed. Ability to reach for objects (e. g. pressing elevator butons, opening doors) without losing balance decreases with aging. Funcional reach test, reach along wall without falling over. Age-related changes afecing balance include: decreased visual acuity (how we see, decreased spaial and depth percepion (receptors aren"t as good, decreased peripheral vision. Vesibular neurons decrease in size and number ater 40 (40% loss in number by age 70) Even though we"re losing neurons, doesn"t afect percepion. Decline in blood low to the skin, 2-prong test which is wider in older adults. Degeneraive changes in the spine with aging can signiicantly afect posture.
