Some types of bodies are valued higher than others in our culture. Example: controversy/double standard about women breast feeding in public and busty victoria"s secret ads in public; nudists; excessive piercings seen as deviant. The body is a sign: body ideals are not innate there"s variability between cultures. Body is a text of culture: symbolizes eras, example: marilyn monroe in 50"s, very curvy, hourglass figure; Twiggy in 60"s, very thin figure: focus on thin bodies, not healthy bodies in north. Organic, natural, material you can feel, you can touch it, you are in it. Symbolic, cultural, technological: examples: technology applied to the body; contact lenses, invetro fertility, knee/hip replacements. Because of existence in two realms, there"s a lot of anxiety and confusion about the body. Example: stem cell research, ivf ethical issues; cosmetic surgery is controversial; basically anything that applies technology to the body. Sex ed in ontario too gay positive.
