KINESIOL 3P03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Television Studies, Media Studies, Action Figure
LESSON 4
3. Developmental Question-What has been the pattern of weight
training practices over time?
4.Theoretical Question- Why has weight training grown among
men in recent years?...What are the social mechanisms or processes
that might explain it?
One Possible Theory: The growth of men’s weight training may
have coincided with the success of the women’s movement?
-muscles are the ultimate symbol of masculinity, at a time
when women are gaining control in the workplace
-the more women become powerful in the workplace the
greater pressure for them to become thinner
Note: The essence of theorizing is that you start with an
observation, and then imagine the observation as the outcome of a
(hidden) process.
It must be the fault of the media huh?
-beware of blaming ‘the media’ because it begs the question
‘who/what changed what appears in the media?’
-media doesn’t produce ideals they reflect ideals
-this guy measured action figure chest and muscles over
decade to decade
Reviewing the Literature
-in the research process, this part of the process is where
perspiration is more important than inspiration
-in general, good research questions emerge from a
thorough appreciation of the existing research
Questions to ask yourselves as you think about your group projects
-have similar issues to the one you are interested in been
researched before?

Document Summary
Muscles are the ultimate symbol of masculinity, at a time when women are gaining control in the workplace the more women become powerful in the workplace the greater pressure for them to become thinner. Note: the essence of theorizing is that you start with an observation, and then imagine the observation as the outcome of a (hidden) process. Beware of blaming the media" because it begs the question. Media doesn"t produce ideals they reflect ideals this guy measured action figure chest and muscles over decade to decade. Reviewing the literature in the research process, this part of the process is where perspiration is more important than inspiration in general, good research questions emerge from a thorough appreciation of the existing research. Questions to ask yourselves as you think about your group projects. If so, what can you learn from it? (theoretical approach; method)
