KINESIOL 3K03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Avulsion Fracture, Human Leg, Hyaline Cartilage
Document Summary
Mechanisms failure at the site of impact or at the weakest point in the bone. Most often due to impact from someone eg. someone hitting into your tibia from the side bends it and causes it to snap on one side. Presentation varies by type, location, and extent of damage: localized pain. Muscle guarding, happens often in femur fracture: +/- deformity. May or may not be there depending on the bone eg, scaphoid won"t have much deformity, femur will have: impaired function. Think about function, how big is the impairment lateral malleolus, avulsion would not impair function as much as major bones like a tibia. Immobilize: keep things stable in their current position, minimize further movement of fracture. And then complications are uncommon but can occur: infection specifically compound/open fractures, compartment syndrome, deep vein thrombosis (dvt, pulmonary embolism (pe) When we break something, often the bone fractures and bleeds into the compartment, which is okay if the compartment contains it.
