Mental illnesses are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, or behaviour associated with significant distress and impaired functioning. Mental illnesses affect people of all ages, education levels, income levels, and cultures. Mental illness is not a choice what causes mental illness. Multifactorial process/interaction: inherited traits, brain chemistry: neurotransmitters, hormones play a role, psychological/social environment we grow up in, environmental (toxic, viruses, drugs) Epidemiology estimated one-year prevalence (% of the population who have the disorder during any 1 year period) of mental illnesses among adults in canada unipolar depression: 4. 1-4. 6% anxiety disorders: 12. 2% Ocd and related disorders: obsession with doing things 10-20x in the same way.
