Do have the ability to learn how to act in a more socially acceptable way. Characteristics: inability to learn (not intellectual, sensory or other health factors), inability to build/ maintain interpersonal relationships, inappropriate behaviour/ feelings, unhappy, depressed mood, tendency to develop physical symptoms or fear. Prevalence: 2-10%(hard to narrow window bc so many emotional disorders). More boys than girls (80%), mostly in middle school years and a decline in high school aged: most likely still have it but learn how to act= prevalence becomes less as we age= more experience in social settings. Except: conduct disorder which increases in early high school, boys become more aggressive, girls become more promiscuous. Autism spectrum disorder= pervasive development disorder: severe, chronic developmental disability occurring before 3 years of age. Diagnostic criteria: a: deficits in social communication and interaction in many contexts= defects in : Social-emotional reciprocity, nonverbal communicative behaviours, developing, maintaining and understanding relationships.
