Neuromatrix of pain is hijacked by social pain (sensory/afecive/evaluaive) When you feel isolated, this plays into the afecive brain region. You can be emoionally hurt, acivate the insula and make you feel physical pain. This iniiaion of the brain and afecing how you perceive it in the periphery. The ability to understand what others feel, be in an emoional or sensory state. Had couples, put them into scanner and administered heat source or their partner. Greater acivity in the somatosensory cortex when painful simulus was administered to self. Simulated right arm: looking at let somatosensory cortex. Green line: pain on themselves, red line: partner experiences it. The peak is higher when you experience the pain then when you see it in your partner in the somatosensory cortex (intensity & locaion) Insula and acc equally acive when painful simulus was administered to self and boyfriend.
