Document Summary

Eyebrows and eyelashes protect from sun, foreign objects, perspiration. Eyelids (palpebrae) upper eyelid is called superior palpebra, lower eyelid is called the inferior palpebra. Between the palpebrae is the palpebral fissure (open area of eye). Shades the eyes during sleep, protects from excessive light, foreign objects, spreads lubricating fluid over eyes (tears) Where the two palpebrae meet is called the canthi medial and lateral canthus, medial canthus. Pink mound called the caruncle modified sweat and oil glands (produces gid) Conjunctiva mucous membrane that forms inner layer of eyelid, folds back upon itself to cover anterior white of the eye up to the level of the cornea. Forms a pocket to stop objects from entering posterior area of eye (protects from debris from external environment) can also respond to irritantants conjunctivitis (inflammatory) pink eye. Lacrimal gland produces tears into lacrimal ducts (superior and lateral to eye) which transport to surface of eye where they move medially and inferiorly towards medial canthus.
