Lecture 13: turbulent ow theory suggests that velocity is highest in the center of the artery. At a bifurcation the velocity is greatest at the inside edge and then reverts back to being greater in the center. Inadequate oxygen supply to part of the heart: secondary to impaired blood ow (caused by impaired blood ow, symptoms: chest pain, arm pain, neck and jaw pain, indigestion pain. It takes decades to decrease the size of the lumen but a thrombus or a ruptured plaque can cause a heart attack (myocardial infarction) within minutes: 30-50% of rst heart attacks can be fatal. Plaques that are prone to rupture: thin brous caps, lipid and macrophage rich, lack smooth muscle. Diagnosis: often come to late, mi or death as initial presentation of cad, 62% for men, 46% for women. Lecture 14: the relationship between chd and pa is studied through occupational studies, leisure time pa studies and studies of tness.
