Document Summary

Tissue classification based on structure of cells, composition of non-cellular extracellular matrix and cell function: epithelial, connective, muscular, nervous. Cells can be held together in a number of ways. Cell junctions: points of contact between cells: tight junctions, adherens junctions, desmosomes, hemidesmosomes, gap junctions. Epithelial cells attach to a basement membrane. Epithelial tissue is avascular but does have a nerve supply. Classification: covering and lining epithelia are classified according to the shape of the cells and how many layer thick they are. Stratified: depends on the shape of apical cells. Grandular epithelium: a gland is a single cell or a mass of epithelial cells adapted for secretion. Thyroid gland: structural classifications of glandular epithelium. Multicellular composed of many cells that form a distinctive microscopic structure or macroscopic organ. Salivary glands: simple tubular, simple branched tubular, simple coiled tubular, simple acinar, simple branched acinar, compound tubular, compound acinar, compound tubuloacinar, functional classification of glandular epithelium.
