Document Summary

To increase a behaviour, you need to be able to identify what is reinforcing to someone. A reinforce is identified only after its positive effect on behaviour has been demonstrated. Any stimulus can be a reinforce if the target behaviour increases when consistently followed be that stimulus. Never assume that because something is a reinforce for you, that it is for someone else! Item the individual picks first is likely a reinforce. The true test of whether something is a reinforcer is to present it contingent on a behaviour and see if that behaviour increases. If the behaviour does not increase, perhaps (cid:449)hat you thought (cid:449)as a rei(cid:374)for(cid:272)er, (cid:449)as(cid:374)"t! Things that are reinforcers at one time may not be at other times: preference assessments must be done often!!! Reinforcer is contingent on the behaviour and given consistently only when the behaviour happens. The reinforcer is not presented if the behaviour does not occur. So(cid:373)eti(cid:373)es you (cid:449)a(cid:374)t so(cid:373)ethi(cid:374)g, so(cid:373)eti(cid:373)es you do(cid:374)"t.
