Scott is a healthy 32yr old male who does not take any regular medications. Since scott was 17 years old, he has smoked 2 packages of cigarettes/day. Yesterday, scott developed a cough with a fever. Suspecting that he was coming down with a cold , scott decided to go to bed early. Unfortunately, scott continued to cough through the night and didn"t get much rest. The next morning, shelia finds scott febrile, diaphoretic and unwell. Scott tells sheila that every time he coughs he feels like a knife is stabbing him in the ribs . Scott also complains that he can"t take a deep breath because of the pain, and that his sputum is now a rust colour: rust colours sputum is indicative of blood and pus coughed up from the lungs.
