HTHSCI 1H06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Central Nervous System, Schwann Cell, Ependyma
Document Summary
In cns and pns there are about 100 billion neurons. There are 4x the amount of glial cells which are supporting cells for the neurons. Central nervous system: responsible for integrating sensory information and integrating it: brain, spinal cord. Grey matter: neurons cells bodies are located. White matter: made of axons connecting parts of grey matter together. Ependymal cells: form a barrier between cerebrospinal fluid (csf) and the brain itself. Astrocytes: make contact with the blood vessels. Microglia: type of glial cells and is a form of active immune defense. Mostly in white matter because you need fast connections. One of these that wraps around several axons to provide that myelination. Peripheral nervous system: mixed spinal nerves carrying, sensory information from the body to cns (afferents, motor information from cns to the body (efferents) This is because the brain is formed very carefully and so you don"t want new axons going in random directions.
