Describe the structure and function of the upper and lower airways. 7 are true ribs that come from your vertebrae and come out to the front to articulate with the sternebrae. 3 false ribs because they"re not touching the sternum. 2 floating ribs that are false, sitting in the muscle of the back and don"t come around to the front. Since the rib doesn"t fully come around and there"s still cartilage in the front, it allows some movement and compression. If we didn"t have costal cartilage we would break ribs when doing compressions. Sternal angle is between the first and second ic space. Manubrium [up top], body [longest], xiphoid [bottom] Ribs articulate with the sternum out front and synovial joints in the back. Ribs curve occurs mostly at the lateral margins.
