Depression, anxiety, bipolar and suicide - october 17. Bereavement, grief and loss are normal parts of aging. Most people are naturally resilient when it comes to loss. Emotions, thoughts, behaviours that are similar to those evoked by depression. Condition listed in the appendix of dsm-v as suggested for further study (not diagnosable) People who use problem-focused and emotion-focused coping together cope better. Emergence of late life depression is associated with decline in cognitive functioning, especially executive functioning. Many elders have a lack of awareness of their problems and will focus on cognitive impairment, completely ignoring depressive symptoms. Vascular depression hypothesis: cardiovascular disease can predispose or perpetuate a depressive episode with underlying neurological brain disorders. Self-report surveys are used for screening and are good for identifying one"s intensity of depression and/or symptoms (geriatric depression scale, beck depression inventory, etc. ) Unstructured interviews can assess current symptoms, history of depression, attempts at coping and psychosocial stressors.
