To describe things that really aren"t addictions. In free societies , individual governs themselves through self-discipline. Since middle of 20th-21st century, societies that are free are governed through certain ideas and concepts that become accepted, understood by population and we govern ourselves. Idea of addiction is useful because gives a benchmark (something to measure selves against) as way of self governing to ensure we engage in good/proper behaviour. Typologies of deviance create categories (criminal, addicts) to direct certain behaviours and discipline ourselves. Addiction as threat to self-positioning of normal requires constant vigilance way of shaping what counts as good/normal behaviour. Some truth to self-governance emotions are measuring stick to help us make sure we don"t fall into category of addict. The addict identity (like aa) necessary for this type of governance. Stable/ rm concept can"t be spectrum of misuse. Addict useful for moral regulation without blame; an individual who can be subjected to experts" policies to protect them .
