By almost all accounts, we seem to be living through an on-campus mental health crisis. 2016 - 15% of all canadian students had a formal diagnosis of depression, Between 2009-2015, enrollment in us increased 6%, but those using psychotherapeutic services increased by 30% (24% of all students consulting these services) Its about willingness to report mh problems (and receptiveness to that idea) rather than genuinely more stress. Proliferation of mh discussion - awareness raising mh first aid, anti-stigma - has primed people to understand problems through this lens. Compared to general population, degree of mh problems not disproportionate. Suicide rate on campuses is essentially the same as young people off campus - the different is in how it is spoken about. Matter of perception rather than something located within the university itself. Becomes about our story and how we imagine things and how media talks.
