Document Summary
20th c. , growth in size and importance of the psy-disciplines. Year 1900 - psychology and psychiatry was new disciplines. As madness transformed into mental illness, its meaning moved beyond reason into emotional/moral issues. By basing emotionality/morality in the brain, the psydisciplines simultaneously freed people from consequences of their actions, while also dooming them by implying permanence. When someone has mental health problem it means diminished responsibility. Individual is not fully in control madness - they were unreasonable/ disconnected from reality. Emotionality was not part of madness except people who were killing themselves. Anxiousness, worry, anger etc were not understood as madness. Mental processes become seen as central to human endeavor, from advertising strategy to occupational health to school performance. Turn to them "comprehend and surmount problems of the human condition like despair, loss, conflict" Intrinsic to humanity (cannot be human and excape these things)
