Mental disorders are characterized by their efect on: Some disorders only afect one of these elements, others are felt in muliple areas. As a spiritual problem (possession, problemaic relaionship with god) As a balance problem (yin/yang, bodily humours) Mental illness as a personal problem (moral failing, no such thing as mental illness at all) Mental illness as a problem of consciousness (psychoanalysis) Mental illness as a social problem (poverty, naomi wolf) A biological disease like any other, with viruses, lesions, and geneics causing malfuncions in the brain. A physical disorder it has symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. Psychological models also focus on the individual, but take into consideraion mental/psychic processes. Believing that mental disorder arises from internal mental processes that relect the interacion of the individual with her environment. The behavioural model stresses that mental disorder is primarily learned behaviour rather than physiological illness or a psychological conlict.
