Document Summary

Its called "mental health" because we are referring to feelings, thoughts, cognition and self concept: how someone presents themselves and experiences it. What does good mental health mean: no generally accepted definition- contested, minimalist point of view, absence of mental disorders, anyone who doesn"t have a mental disorder has good mental health. You are mentally ill or healthy: broader considerations, the ability to get on in everyday life. Implies that those with fewer resources struggle to have good mental health: the ability to connect with other people. You have bipolar disorder or you do not. Everyday life is naturally full of some degree of negative affect, stress, concern etc. What defines poor mental health is just as contested as good mental health. All of us have an aspect of a mental disease experience, so it is not a disease. The official list of mental disorders -> gateway to treatment published by apa (american psychiatrist association)
