HLTHAGE 2G03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Corporate Social Responsibility, Biology Of Depression, Smart People
Document Summary
For mental illness it lacks a concrete form, therefore representations are crucial. Representations inform what it is, what its nature is. Mental illness is whatever we say it is. How we depict it is what it becomes. Mental illness, lacking in concrete form is a venue for projection: people project upon mental illness their desires, fears, worries, hopes, etc: media"s central role is who fits and who does not (you"re mentally healthy or mentally ill) It helps to set up the walls of who is fine and who needs to be altered via treatment, institutions, therapy etc: mental illness is always about exclusion, dangerous and violent. Lacking intelligence & awareness: people conflate mental disorder w/ intellectual impairment. Females as insatiable seductresses: mentally ill women throw themselves at men and try to do evil things via sexuality, mad genius, breeding ground for artistic genius ex: kanye, robin williams, really smart people, pitiable innocents.
