If 20th c was the century of the psy-ences then 21st c marks the culmination of the growth of psy: from relief of negative states and deficiencies to enhancement, looks at strengths. Increasing, daily discipline and governance over psychological life come from the self, rather than experts: experts are less important when thinking about the psyche. Key ideas: emotions like optimism can be learned, irrespective of life conditions. Happiness is the result of cognitive outlook: cognition controls emotion, people who are happy have a optimistic life view - this is internally based not socially. Inverts freudian theory that thoughts are driven by underlying emotions (themselves being products of life experience) If someone is not happy then it is equated to being sick: those who pursue right happiness rewarded with riches, health, social value, redefines how people exist in the world.
