In 2000-2001, persons aged 65 and over comprised only 12. 5% of the canadian population and yet they accounted for 49. 7% of total provincial/territorial government health expenditures: according to statistics canada projections, seniors could make up between 25% and. 30% of the population by 2030: meeting the diverse needs of seniors could significantly increase overall expenditure on health care. On average, per capita public spending on health for those aged 65 and over is already almost five times greater than per capita spending on the rest of the population. Ds : from a historical perspective, the process of population aging in a given country is determined primarily by fertility (birth) rate and secondarily by mortality (death) rates. But aggregate statistics do not tell the whole story.
