HLTHAGE 2F03 Lecture 8: Alcohol Con't

22 views3 pages

Document Summary

Some countries ban alcohol consumption, many set age limits, and some don"t set an age limit at all (e. g. norway) Not all limits are codified, some are just socially understood. Higher minimum legal drinking age lower injury and death rates among youth, including car accidents. Does nothing to decrease problem drinking - many suggest that availability at younger age might demystify drink, remove status (and change expectations) Problem drinking may be rooted in its status. When it has a status in which we have to wait to do it, it leads to drinking. When people are used to seeing alcohol around them as food, they"re less likely to engage in problem or binge drinking. Despite social efforts at control, drinking is widespread - all social classes, (increasingly) all genders, across age span. Perhaps never more popular - expansion of microbreweries, micro distilleries, etc. Yet despite increased evidence of social harms, susceptibility (rather than exposure) contains to gain sway.
