The Life Course
•Erikson said there are are 8 stages that are universal to development
•Stages: Infancy, Early Childhood, Childhood, Early Adolescence, Adolescence, Youth,
Adulthood, Old Age
•If you fail at one of the stages you can still recover from it
Infancy
•Crisis Point
•Trust vs. Mistrust
•They learn if they can trust a person or not
•Social care and comfort
•Very important because it is the basis for their life
•There is trust in the environment for a baby that the family is going to feed it regularly
and take proper care of the child
•From the time of birth a child learns to be able to trust people by the level of care that
they receive
•In early life when a child is not properly cared for by its birth parents and it is put up for
adoption. The child struggles to bond with adoptive parents cause it had never learnt to
bond
•Problems later in life can go back to earlier stages of development such as mistrust
•Intrinsic Value
•Hope, drive
•Could be sacrificed if this stages is not properly completed
Early Childhood
•Crisis Point
•Autonomy vs. Doubt
•We have to encourage there autonomy
•They shouldn't doubt themselves
•They may not do something perfect every time but it gives them a self of
accomplishment
•If we side line them by not answering a question they have can cause a sense of doubt
•A child should never doubt
•We should never talk down to a child as they also have functioning minds
•Intrinsic Value
•Will, Courage
Childhood
•Crisis Point
•Initiative vs. Guilt
•The individual becomes very adventures
•Initiative gives them a sense of accomplishment
•Encourage the child to develop without betraying them
•There is a challenge they meet and they develop a self
•Establishes a meaning and a purpose for their living. To learn and challenge themselves
•The develop the knowledge of what they can, can’t and maybe could do
•Their purpose increases
•Sense of guilt can also arise
