Mental disorders are characterized by their effect on: Some disorders only affect one of these elements, others are felt in multiple ar- One of the oldest ideas is that mental illness is a spiritual problem (possession, problematic relationship with god, etc. ) that will lead them to behave in an unusual way. Chemical imbalance (neurotransmitters), a prominent explanation of mental ill- ness that has recently received criticism and is losing credibility. A somatic ( of the body ) problem (ibn-sina, psychopharmaceuticals) A personal problem, that the person is to blame for their own problems (moral failing, problems in living) A problem of consciousness, prevalent a while back (psychoanalysis) Naomi wolf, feminist writer, claimed that high rates of anorexia is a result of so- cial pressures of beauty and appearance.
