Women provide the majority of informal support, and older care recipients are more likely to be women. Two-thirds of all the care provided is by the informal sector (sometimes working together w/ the formal supports) 70% to 80% of informal support received by older adults come from family and friends. Helps older person cope w/ everyday activities but also w/ personal crisis, adjusting to change in health, or locating other services. Spouses and children are main providers; friends and neighbours also help. Estimated b to b in support provided by family and friends.
