Family life: a scene of stability and change . Nowadays families are much smaller in numbers. More women are working dual earners in the family. Increasing divorce rate impacts families (size may be impacted if the divorcee decides to re- marry) Don"t think about family as ppl living under the same roof. It can be ppl who have the same values. Focus on family ties rather than co-residence. Consider the family as a fluid set of relations that ebbs and flows over time w/in and across generations. As the family unit ages it moves thru time. Beanpole family structure the beanpole family is a 21st century version of the extended family: with a long thin structure, the beanpole family has strong ties but lives apart. There aren"t many children per family, but intergenerational ties are strong even if separated by oceans. Life course perspective helps explain dynamic nature of family life and social relations.
