Health & aging 1aa3: intro to health studies. Three contemporary approaches in socsci: positivist/structural functionalist, critical/conflict approach. Positivist/structural: three stages, theological, metaphysical, positive/structural functionalist, durkheim. Look at facts objectively: observe patterns, patterns of regularity can be studied statistically, entitled to opinions but look at the facts, studied medicine in 50s/60s, dominant paradigm was positivist. Viewed society as consisting of interdependent social structures and ensure social order/stability if functioning properly . Star paradigm: education family religion politics economics. Parson"s: person has right to responsibility due to illness. Interpretive/symbolic interactionist approach to trust them: symbolic interactionists understand health and illness as interpersonal meanings since people socially construct their reality given their experiences, more of a microscopic view at the individual and their agency. Social construction of reality: health care systems are socially and culturally connected, universal health care is part of our social reality as canadians.
