Life expectancy - people in the poorest parts of glasgow have a life expectancy 12 years less than those living in the wealthier parts. The social gradient: good health is correlated with high ses - education, access to resources, good housing, etc. all have an effect on health - this is true for every community it is measured in. Studies controlling for smoking, diet, and physical activity found the income-health relationship was the same: our decisions have a small effect compared to income. Limits ability for self-care and manage health (unstable hours, transportation difficulties, etc. ) Generating more national wealth does not necessarily translate to health benefits. Politics of health: politi(cid:272)s has tre(cid:373)e(cid:374)dous i(cid:374)flue(cid:374)(cid:272)e o(cid:374) health ho(cid:449), the healthcare systems (low income canadians are in better shape than low income. Norway: christian democratic -> less redistribution (flat tax rate), strong social policies - ex. Germany (neo)liberal -> weak redistribution, weak social services - ex.
