Looking at life expectancy russia (58) v sweden (78) people in the poorest parts of glasgow have a life expectancy 12 years less than those living in the wealthier parts. Poor black men in the us live 20 years less than rich white men. Social explanation says that perhaps it"s not poor choices or bio that causes huge diff in health outcomes, that it might be out of a persons control What is it about the social environment that might structure one"s biology. Good health is associated with high socioeconomic status, not just physical health but education, housing, etc. Living conditions determine our health more than medical intervention and lifestyle choices. Our range of choices is shaped (and limited) by socio-cultural, political, and economic circumstances. Health status follows a social gradient - the higher one"s status in society, the better one"s health. Marmot whitehall study- even extends to civil service, not simply about abject poverty.
