Control over indigenous women: settler men went about controlling indigenous women in other ways. Could not inherit husband"s personal property upon his death. Everything went to his children: amendment in 1884 allowed men to will their estate to their wives. Women were essential to social and political structures. Continued to recognize hereditary chiefs and clan mothers until 1924.
