Working girls had their time managed for them inside the boarding houses, with restrictions upon how they could spend their leisure time including exercise schedules. Whe(cid:374) (cid:271)oardi(cid:374)g super(cid:448)isors (cid:374)oti(cid:272)ed the girls" gro(cid:449)i(cid:374)g distaste for the traditio(cid:374)al role of the women in marriage, they relaxed the restrictions on male visits to the home. Socials were held for the boarding house girls to meet respectable men to hopefully wed. O(cid:272)ials (cid:449)ere i(cid:373)ple(cid:373)e(cid:374)ted i(cid:374) order to (cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:271)at (cid:862)les(cid:271)ia(cid:374)is(cid:373)(cid:863) i(cid:374) the (cid:271)oardi(cid:374)g houses. Working girls were a completely new class of people that resulted in new social and power structures as well as infrastructure. The government saw that women were gaining too much independence in that they were now being given the opportunity to support themselves, and the boarding houses were a response to pull back on this independence.
