War had devastated greece in the form of population loss (athens pop. Of male adults cut in half), economic hardship, damage to crops and farms, poor harder hit than rich, wealth unequally distributed. Stasis- civil war between rich and poor, democrats and oligarchs. An option for hoplites who could no linger support themselves after the war was to become a mercenary. Cities in need of manpower now looked beyond mercenaries to the poorer citizens to serve as light armed troops: spartan vs athenian models.
