He wrote about what it is to be a spartan soldier: herodotus, xenophon, plutarch. Athenian aristocrat of late 5th , early 4th centuries bce. He has bits of evidence that help us trace the city. Must give of produce to whatever spartiate is allotted the land. Impact both on domestic and foreign practices o: allows spartan males to turn to other activities, spartan army cannot travel too far from home. Their policy at all times having been governed by the necessity of taking precautions against them thucydides: helots often accompanied spartans on campaign. They represent a majority of spartan army number. Sparta did not exhort any control over the people, but when they were called to war, they were expected to come.
