History: fills in large gaps that others do not: cassius dio, tacitus. Focused on how the emperor gets along with the senate. There is little interest of what is happening in other areas. Challenges for the new principes: how to make an informal position formal. He kills arminius: drusus" campaign in 17-20. When he died, he told tiberius to not change the borders. Maintains certain client kingdoms in the east, like armenia: they do launch punitive expeditions. They cross the river, destroy villages and steal, and go back home. At this stage, no more massive conquests will happen: there will be yearly oaths taken to the princeps, to the emperor, there will be no more triumphs for anyone outside the emperor and the family. Each emperor is going to be slotted into that position. The relationship with the senate, provincial subjects, soldiers and roman populous. Military: must come off as militarily strong and intelligent, so the soldiers will follow.
