The dark age and the rise of the polis. Rich nations fear migrants may destabilize regimes. Begins in greece earlier than elsewhere out of necessity - iron is around, so they use it. Greeks begin to settle islands in aegean + coastal areas of turkey. Population can be tracked by presence of mycenaean pottery. 320 40 sites occupied on mainland greece from 13th-10th century bce. Greek dialects/groups - hellenes, not greeks: aeolians, north. Ionians: on the coast, dorians, peloponnese, arcadians. Dialectical variations, differences in local customs, but same hellenic language and heritage. Small hamlets that will eventually evolve into city states. Lower class (smaller land holders, labourers, craftsmen etc) There was small scale warfare between neighbouring villages. Renewed contact w/ near east + introduction of phoenician script. Adapted to include vowels for the first time (eg. alpha) Established permanent colonies in western mediterranean (including carthage) Agriculture becomes more productive, population increases (700 bc = villages of 100+)
